“Wanting to try something different, cheap and tasty once in a while? Pepper Lunch was that place for us. Pepper lunch serves sizzling plates with already seasoned ingredients, which cook on the sizzling plate provided. My husband, a couple of our best mates and I went for a lunch in the city one weekend. The food was delicious, however we note that it has very high salt and /or MSG content. It may be a place to avoid if you have a sensitive salt or MSG pallet.”

“Pepper Lunch is located on the corner of Elizabeth street and Little Lonsdale Street in the Melbourne CBD. During the day, the windows which surround two sides of this building provide heaps of natural light. Great for a warm spring day in Melbourne. The air of the restaurant is filled with the smell of seasoning and sizzling meat which is nice. There were lots of people filling the restaurant that afternoon for lunch. I believe that Pepper Lunch is a franchise from overseas, which has been brought to Australia.

Ordering and payment is performed at the front counter after you decided what dishes you wanted from the menu’s provided. A number is then provided where the staff brought us our food. The wait was not long and there was no real interaction with the staff required. This was nice and efficient.

Three sizzling plates were ordered that day. Each sizzling plate comes with a paper surrounding the outside to provide instruction on how to eat the dishes. The concept is very interesting, where food arrives already seasoned and rice already steamed. The meat is mostly raw and is cooked on the sizzling plate to your liking. Once the meat is cooked to your liking, a tip would be to move the meat to sit on top of the rice or vegetables so that it does not overcook. It is key to mix the dish thoroughly to ensure even cooking and the sauce is evenly distributed. Flavour in all these dishes were plentiful, with additional sauces available to be added to taste. Although it was delicious, it comes at a cost due to the high salt and MSG content. After effects for my husband and I were a very dry mouth.

I really enjoy the concept and the taste of Pepper Lunch, however only once in a while due to the after effects. Worth a try once if you have a high salt and MSG tolerance.”
